This session will focus on COVID and the affects it's had on our kiddos, as well as the role we can play in supporting them. It will answer questions such as:

  • How can we help transition kids back to socialization?
  • How do we help them cope with the grief that will arise as they do things they were not allowed to do for so long?
  • How do we ensure the next academic year doesn't become a year where we push kids to 'catch up' but where we meet them where we are are at?
  • How do we prepare them for continued mask wearing and distancing  for perhaps many more months?

This session will be led by Dr. Erin Hambrick, a professor at UMKC and all-around expert in child psychology. Dr. Hambrick studies children who have been exposed to trauma or adversity. Specific lines of research include identifying risk and protective factors following exposure to trauma or adversity, identifying helpful ways for caregivers to talk to children about disasters, and evaluating the effectiveness of available trauma treatments in community-based settings. The ultimate goal is to understand which interventions work for whom, under which circumstances.
